Ajax Has been building roads in florida since 1981 and is very experienced with fDOT specifications, quality control documentation, and project administration. Developing a reputation for managing and delivering small to large, heavy civil projects on time while earning high marks from our clients.

1981
Established in April 1981 as Ajax Paving Industries, Inc. of Florida, Owner Herb Jacob chose Mike Horan to move from Michigan and begin Florida operations as General Manager of the Florida branch.
Our first asphalt plant was a portable plant in Placida, Florida that first went into production in January of 1982. Our first job was in a small parking lot at the Landings Shopping Plaza in Sarasota. Ultimately, we did the job twice because the first time was not up to our standards.

1984
In the early days we interviewed nearly 100 people before we found the 7 qualified individuals we were searching for to establish our first paving crew. Our second asphalt plant began production in 1984. This plant is located in East Charlotte County near the Lee County line.
1987
Our third asphalt plant was permitted in 1987 and is located at the entrance to Port Manatee in Manatee County. By the end of the fiscal year, we had reached $7 million in sales, invested in 30 pieces of equipment and hired 35 employees. We had little to no debt as we slowly grew.
In 1998, we replaced our original portable plant from Placida, with a new Gencor stationary asphalt plant. This plant is located in Venice, Florida, our Corporate Office.

2001
In 2001, we purchased the asphalt operation of R.E. Purcell on SR 54 in southern Pasco County. This purchase included an asphalt plant, paving equipment, three paving crews, 20 trucks, property and the entire paving backlog of R.E. Purcell.
2007
In 2007, as a joint venture, we were awarded the largest Florida Department of Transportation project ever. This necessitated the upgrade of the old portable Plant 4 to a new high-production facility. The new plant was installed in 2007 and still remains in operation at Alico Road as Plant #4.
We purchased a plant site near Port Sutton on the east side of Tampa Bay. Production began in 2009 and created three new plants in the metro Tampa/St. Pete market. Ajax had six plants in total at this time.The company name was changed to Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC and Mike Horan became a member of the Limited Liability Company.
2008-2009
2012
In 2012, we purchased the R.E. Purcell Company which included another asphalt plant in Largo, Florida, underground equipment, concrete equipment, and a grading operation. We also hired 100 employees from the R.E. Purcell Operation. The Largo plant gave us coverage on all four corners of the Tampa Bay market.
2019
In early 2019, Ajax purchased an asphalt plant in Gibsonton, Florida from Coastal Bridge Company of Louisiana. Ajax also acquired 54 acres in Lake Wales, Florida for the relocation of this plant, storage, silos and scales. Ajax’s Plant 8 in Lake Wales began operating in 2021.
Construction began in Temple Terrace for a new 10,000 sqft office. The corporate office in Venice also completed an addition and remodel of the facility. Main garage was enlarged and a parts building were constructed. Our plant facilities were upgraded,  adding 9 storage silos and three scales at Plants 1, 4, and 6.

Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. is currently a top asphalt producer of hot mix asphalt in the State of Florida. We have 8 plants, 650+ pieces of equipment and are 500 employees strong, managed by a team with great young leadership.
